Kingdoms of the Mists
Azalin the Necromancer
Who Is Azalin the Necromancer?
Azalin is the seemingly immortal wizard-king of the sprawling realm of Darkon. As a ruler he is cold and distant, taking little overt interest in his citizens. Azalin Rex’s edicts are few, but when they are proclaimed his governors and the common folk move heaven and earth to comply. He has earned his title The Necromancer through several monuments events, both good and ill that are accredited to him, even if he himself has made no such claims. These include the repulsion of invading armies of Vlad Drakov via the raising of a powerful undead army, the complete closing of the Darkon’s borders by an astonishingly numerous ring of undead, and most disturbingly, the cataclysmic transformation of Darkon’s largest city from a vibrant community to a city of undead in a single night. The city is now called Necropolis and any living being that enters its borders is at once slain and transformed into a form of undead.
Where Does He Rule?
Darkon is the largest, most prosperous and most cosmopolitan of all the kingdoms. Boasting two large cities and a population better educated and more racially diverse than any other domain, the day-to-day responsibilities of the region are overseen by a score of powerful governors, spell-casters all. Their word is law, backed by Darkon’s infamous secret police. The governors furthermore rely on a ‘good ruler, bad ruler’ arrangement, making it clear to any dissatisfied citizenry they are welcome to take their case to Azalin.
What Is His Influence In The Kingdoms?
Despite Azalin’s grim reputation, it is difficult to argue with success. The residents of Darkon enjoy a higher and more secure standard of living than those of nearly any other domain, and also a degree of personal freedom not imaginable in even stable kingdoms such as Barovia. A positive relationship could mean you champion the freedoms and racial tolerance of Darkon, a conflicted or negative could mean you look closer at the price, or have been affected in some way by the Necromancer’s ambitions.
